Supreme Court to Sit in Galway for First Time

Legal history is going to be made in Ireland this week with the Supreme Court sitting in Galway for the first time.

This week will see the Supreme Court sitting in NUIG Galway and will mark the first occasion that the Supreme Court has sat outside of a courthouse since 1932. It will also mark the third time that the Supreme Court has sat outside of Dublin.

The first time that the Supreme Court sat outside of Dublin since 1932 was in 2015 when all ten Supreme Court judges sat in the Cork Courthouse on Washington street.  At the time, Justice Denham stated the following, “As the nation approaches the first centennial anniversary of its creation, it is timely that the Supreme Court sits in locations in the State in addition to the Four Courts.”

Following this commitment, this week the Supreme Court is going to hear two cases in Galway. One of these cases will be an appeal against a ‘An Bord Pleanála’ decision.

The sitting will be open to the public although entrance will be available on a first come first served basis. More details about this can be found out here.
